Description

Yew

Yew is beautiful wood. Its sharp colour markings between the core and sapwood make it popular with turners. However, yew is also an expensive wood. It grows slowly and there are no whole forests of it like oak or beech. It is hard and durable. It can be turned wonderfully and has beautiful markings. Yew is used for making handbows, among other things. It is strong and pliable. The colour of the heartwood is initially orange/red but will gradually change to a deep brown under the influence of UV.

A toxic substance used for chemotherapy is extracted from the moisture in the needles. The substance is called Paclitaxel (better known by its brand name Taxol) a cytostatic.

Wood is a natural product and every piece of wood is different. The wood in the picture is meant as an example and will never be exactly the same as the piece sent. Wood can sometimes have a small crack or an old wormhole. The wood is sealed with paraffin.
