How can I fix cracks in wood?
Filling cracks in wood can be done using different techniques, depending on the size, depth and location of the crack. Here are some common methods to effectively fill cracks in wood:
Wood filler or epoxy resin:
- Wood filler: For small cracks and holes, you can use wood filler specially designed for filling wood. The filler is pushed into the crack with a putty knife and then smoothed out. After it hardens, you can sand and finish it like normal wood. Revicol is very suitable for this, you mix it with fine sanding dust from any type of wood.
- Epoxy resin: For larger cracks or cracks that go through the wood, epoxy resin can be a good option. Mix the epoxy according to the manufacturer's instructions, adding any dye if you want to match the colour, and pour it into the crack. Let the epoxy cure according to the recommended drying time before sanding and finishing the surface. In our shop, you will find Ecoat and Aquares, these are 2-component epoxy you can use to fill holes.
2. Wood glue or CA-glue and sawdust:
For small cracks, you can use a mixture of wood glue and fine sawdust to fill the crack. Mix the wood glue with the sawdust until you get a thick paste, press it firmly into the crack and let it dry. After drying, you can sand away the excess material and finish the surface. Note! Some finishing products react differently to wood glue than to the solid wood, this may cause stains in the finished product.
- Wooden dowels or inlays: If the crack is large or you want to achieve a decorative effect, consider inserting wooden dowels or pieces of wood. Drill holes along the crack, fill them with wood glue and insert the dowels or pieces of wood. Let the glue harden, cut off the excess wood and sand the surface smooth.
- Wax of Wood paste: For small cracks and fissures, you can also use wax specially designed for woodworking. Melt the wax and press it into the crack with a spatula. After the wax has cooled and hardened, you can polish the surface.
- Combination of methods: Sometimes a combination of the above methods is needed, especially for complex cracks. Start by filling the base of the crack with epoxy resin or wood glue and sawdust, then use wood filler or another method to finish the top.
Before you start filling cracks, it is important to clean the wood thoroughly and make sure it is dry. If necessary, sand the surface around the crack to ensure good adhesion. Experiment with different techniques on a test piece of wood to see which method works best for your specific situation and to achieve the desired aesthetic results.
