Maroccan Thuja Burl

Are you looking for a luxurious wood type? Thuja Burl wood, originating from Morocco, is an exclusive wood species with a breathtaking pattern and excellent workability. It is known for its warm color, complex grain structure, and pleasant scent, making it a favorite among artisans and artists. The structure is often described as burl wood, irregular and richly figured.

Unique Properties of Thuja Burl

Origin – Thuja Burl is harvested from the root burls and knots of the Tetraclinis articulata, also known as the Atlas Cedar or Moroccan Thuja. This wood primarily grows in the Atlas Mountains and is scarce. There is an export ban from Morocco following a decree by the Moroccan king, but no import ban into the EU. Nevertheless, the majority (and best quality) of Thuja wood comes from Morocco.

Stunning Appearance – The characteristic burl has a deep brown to golden hue with intricate, marble-like patterns and a satin-like sheen after finishing.

Pleasant Scent – Thuja Burl has a distinctive cedar-like fragrance that remains even after processing.

Excellent Workability – Despite its irregular structure, it is easy to turn, sand, and polish. It is ideal wood for the lathe and responds well to oil and lacquer finishes, enhancing its natural beauty.

Durable and Exclusive – Due to its limited availability and labor-intensive harvesting process, Thuja Burl is a highly exclusive wood type primarily used for high-end luxury products.

Applications

Thanks to its unique grain and luxurious appearance, Thuja Burl is widely used for:

  • Lathe Projects – such as pens, bowls, vases, and decorative objects.
  • Luxury Accessories – such as knife handles, jewelry boxes, and writing instruments.
  • Furniture Accents – inlays, veneer, and decorative elements.
  • Instrument Making – valued for its acoustic properties and aesthetic appeal.
