Steinert Drechsleröl
The Steinert brothers wanted to develop their own oil that can bring out the beauty of wood well and protect it well. Furthermore, it had to be vegetable and produced in Germany. With the support of LIVOS Research and Development GmbH & Co. KG they made it for the first time in 2011.
Due to the extremely low proportion of solvents, Steinert drechsleröl is very economical. One liter, one layer is usually sufficient for around 20 m². Consumption is of course highly dependent on the thinning and the absorbency of the wood.
Application range: For interior use on natural timber
Properties
Transparent. Enhances and enriches the natural color of the wood grain. Produces a matt surface after one coat and a satin finish after 2 - 3 coats. Water-resistant. Complies with the German Industrial Standard DIN 53 160 for colour fastness when exposed to perspiration and saliva. Complies with the German Industrial Standard DIN EN 71 Part 3, suitable for toys.
Preparation
Wood must be dry (moisture content below 12 %), unsealed and free of resin and dust. Sand gradually working through the abrasive grits up to 240 grit. Exceptionally, for oak, work up to 180 grit. On porous woods apply carefully by brush. On tannin rich and dyed woods, test before use. Glues and adhesives must be dry.
Application
Stir well before use after removing any skin formed on the surface! Test on comparable scrap timber before use. Depending on surface requirement, absorbency and wood species: apply 1 - 3 thin coats, over the complete surface. Sand after the 1st coat with a fine pad, a fleece, or similar of at least 280 grit to create a smooth, durable surface. The 1st and the 2nd coat should be burnished in with lint-free cotton cloth after about 10 to 15 minutes, before the oil has completely dried. For the 3rd coat, the oil should be applied to the surface as droplets, at a rate of approx. one teaspoon per square metre and burnished in immediately. Use this thinner for the first layer.
Drying time: At 23°C (73°F) and 50% relative humidity: 12 hours for the first coat, 24 hours for subsequent coats. Final durability is reached after 4 weeks. Higher temperatures, will give shorter drying times and require burnishing sooner. At lower temperatures and higher humidity, drying times will be longer, as indicated above.
Coverage: Determine the exact coverage by doing a test coat. As a guide, for the first coat, 1.0 liter covers approx 20 sq.m. Subsequent coats require significantly less.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Shelf life: unopened at least 4 years. Transfer unused product into a smaller container for storage in order to minimize excess air.
Disposal: Ensure that any surplus product and cleaning materials, cloths etc. are disposed of safely in accordance with relevant bye-laws and national regulations. Do not empty into drains.
