Spindlemaster by Robert Sorby
The Spindlemaster by Robert Sorby is somewhere between a spindle gouge and a skew. The chisel has a rounded bottom like a gouge and a flat top, like a bevel. Due to the sharp grinding angle it performs well on long wood (between the centers) and especially on soft wood such as pine. You use it just like a flat chisel or as a form gouge. Sharpening
You can sharpen this chisel with a diamond file and if you want to do it on a machine you can do so with the accessories that you also use for the spindle gouge or bowl gouge. Such as the vari-grind and the SVD 186 from Tormek.
2 Versions
812H - 3/4 inch (19 mm) version. This chisel is about 16 inches long. The handle is over 10 inches. The blade is 3/4 inch wide
879H - 1/2 inch (13 mm) version. This chisel is about 10 inches long. The handle is about 6 inches. The blade is 1/2 inch wide
Hollowing?
Often presented as an all-rounder, but that is not the case. The Spindlemaster can very well perform as a spindle gouge AND a skew but the tool is certainly not a hollowing tool as I read on another site.
