Padouk

Padouk is a tropical wood species derived from several tree species within the genus Pterocarpus, notably Pterocarpus soyauxii and Pterocarpus dalbergioides. This comes mainly from West Africa. There is also Asian Padouk, known as Andaman Padouk, which grows in Southeast Asia, especially in the Andaman Islands and parts of India.

Padouk is known for its striking colour. Freshly felled, the wood has a bright red to orange hue, which slowly darkens to deep reddish brown or even purple brown when exposed to light and air.

The wood has a fine to medium texture with a natural sheen. The grain can vary from straight to slightly wavy. Despite being a tropical hardwood species, it can be shaped and turned quite well.

Padouk is widely used outdoors because it is a durable, insect-resistant wood. You see this type of wood a lot in guitar making because it gives nice resonance.  So padouk is a valuable and versatile wood that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Like many tropical woods, Padouk wood dust can cause an allergic reaction in some people, such as skin rashes or respiratory problems.

nature

Wood is a natural product and every piece of wood is different. The wood in the picture is meant as an example and will never be exactly the same as the piece sent. Wood can sometimes have a small crack or an old wormhole. The wood is sealed with paraffin.
