The termite XL is actually just the old ring tool reinvented. With the Termite XL you can make nicer, neater and deeper hollows in end-grain wood. And a trained turner will be able to make the most beautiful finishes with it!
When the Termite XL is taken out of the box, a handle must first be turned. The XL consists of only a shaft (40.5 cm long and 16 mm thick) as standard. The ring tool itself can be ordered separately. There is a choice of 3 ring tools of approximately 5, 10 and 15 mm diameter.
The ring is made of HSS. They are secured with an Allen screw in the rigid steel holder, which in turn must be mounted in a handle. You can of course turn it yourself or this purchase for that purpose. The ring is cut on 2 sides. The flat side that allows turning on the bottom of the workpiece and the slightly tapered side, which can be used to turn along the wall of the object.
The Oneway Termite is a popular tool, especially in France. This is mainly because Jean-François Escoulen uses the tool at his woodturning school.
One of the good things about the Termite is the optional sharpening kit.
Keep it sharp!
Oneway has put a lot of thought into this. What is annoying about a ring tool? The grinding! Well NOT at the Termite! Personally, I am in favor of sharpening before a tool becomes blunt.
The sharpening set consists of a block of metal (serves as a holder for the ring when sharpening) and a pointed sharpening stone. This can be used in a (column) drill or router and the tool will be super sharp again in no time. Can be ordered separately.
Also available is a Borazon sharpening point. It lasts up to 100 times longer and never needs to be cleaned.
Furthermore, there is a #3 bit. for fast and coarser work.
