Yew is beautiful wood. Popular with turners due to the sharp color markings between the core and the sapwood. However, yew is also an expensive type of wood. It grows slowly and there are no whole forests like you have with oaks or beech. It is hard and durable. It rotates wonderfully and has a beautiful pattern. Yew is used, among other things, for making longbows. It is strong and flexible. The color of the heartwood is initially orange/red but will gradually discolor to a deep brown color under the influence of UV.
A toxic substance is extracted from the fluid in the needles and used for chemotherapy. The substance is called Paclitaxel (better known under the brand name Taxol), a cytostatic drug.
