Kelterlack, foodsafe and waterproof
Kelterlack
Kelterlack is a food-safe, fast-drying lacquer developed for protecting surfaces that come into contact with food, acids, and alcohol. It has been widely used in winemaking and brewing (a Kelter is a grape press). With this finish, your piece will be highly resistant to acids, moisture, alcohol, and mechanical wear. Ideal for finishing cups, carafes, vases, and bowls.
Kelterlack is approved for food contact. (EU regulation 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 175.300).
Gloss
Once Kelterlack has dried, it provides a glossy finish. You can increase the shine by polishing it again with a friction polish — liquid or cream. To reduce the gloss slightly, you can use an abrasive pad. You can also apply a wax layer over it, which will give the surface a softer feel.
Coverage
Coverage is approximately 120–160 grams per m². It is recommended to apply at least 2 or 3 layers. If you apply Kelterlack by pouring or dipping, 1 layer is usually sufficient.
Application
Kelterlack can be applied with a brush or roller, but can also be poured or dipped. The ideal working temperature is between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius for optimal results. Your piece will be dust-dry after 30–45 minutes. A second layer can be applied after 8 to 12 hours. The product is fully cured after 2 to 3 days and can then be fully used. The product is only food-safe after complete curing. Once opened, the lacquer can be stored for 12 months. Tools can be cleaned with acetone- or ethyl acetate-based products.
Tips
The smoother your surface is before applying Kelterlack, the glossier the final result will be.
Safety
Avoid inhaling the vapors and use in a well-ventilated area.
